After closing a majority of its branches three months ago, ADT announced this week that it will exit the residential solar business completely.
“The decision to exit solar operations was made after careful deliberation, and we expect this strategic action to drive substantial operational and financial benefits to ADT,” said ADT Chairman, President and CEO Jim DeVries. “We want to acknowledge and thank our employees, partners, and customers as we work through this transition.”
ADT will continue with its security and smart home business.
ADT entered the solar market in 2021 after acquiring successful dealer Sunpro Solar for $160 million in cash and more in stock, implying a total value of $825 million. Sunpro was rebranded to ADT Solar.
ADT said that through the first nine months of 2023, ADT’s core security business exhibited strong performance while the solar business faced challenges. The company’s Board of Directors has approved the exit from solar, and the solar business may be up for sale.
ADT Solar operated throughout the country, in markets like Atlanta, Chicago, Houston, St. Louis, Miami and Phoenix. The company was ranked at No. 34 nationally on the 2023 Top Solar Contractors List, based on kilowatts installed.

Hi my name is Cynthia Hollis, I had solar panels installed through ADT, my daughter told me that ADT is going out of business and she found out that ADT is going out of business. I called the number that I have and and only get a voice message saying as as of June 17,24 there will no longer be accepting new customers and existing customers can go to their website I.ADT.com/Solar. I didn’t get a connection to that email but this website popped up as I started reading your complaints I think we’re all in the same boat, now we got to pay for solar panels that we won’t be able to get serviced any type of help that we may need. Has anybody started a lawsuit we might have to file for a class action lawsuit because they got us all good we still have to pay. Question? Did did anybody get any kind of notification that they were closing down or downsizing you know like a letter letter or email ? I know in my contract it says that we won’t use attorneys but we’ll use a litigation aren’t we passed that ? So if there’s you have any insight because it’s all new to me could you please let me but I think I’m going to look into an attorney. Thank you and have a good day I’m going to try to find this website

I bought or paying on a loan for solar through SUN PRO. They were great. Sale person every knowledgeable and thorough in his explanation of how things worked. But now I was never been notified that Sun pro had sold to ADT solar until I call back in September 2023 about an on going problem with an Array not reporting. I called customer service the Sun pro number and a ADT person answered. He explained and I told him my problem. Well to make it short I have call support service, Enphase and everyone else and all I get is your in que and a Company called Pronto will contact me with some one who will check the system. Oh and it is still under warranty. I have called every month for 10 months and get same response. What’s a person to do? Are there any Lawsuits against them for this?
David Huntley says
I just found out today that ADT is ending solar. I have a SunPro 44 panel ground mount system and have had troubles with the Enphase reporting system since it was installed two years ago. I have not had any information since December 2023. I also, before I got smart, purchased a battery backup from ADT last year and still do not have it installed. I just talked to my “project manager” and was informed they have located an electrician to install it and should be contacted soon. I’ve got my fingers crossed but am looking up the numbers to BBB and state Attorney General.
I also feel bad as I referred my neighbor and brother-in-law (who both bought from SunPro) and now I have to tell then the news.

If they ending their solar business what about the warranties? I had SunPro install my panels a couple of years ago. No issues with mine but curious if they will still on their warranty.
Betti says
indeed. I am furious with them since like many others apparently got sold a bill of goods. NO ONE STEPPING UP TO HELP OUT HERE. and I’m stuck with the $39K bill.

We were completely lied to by ADT SOLAR! Took them several months to get the panels up and then a year to get them operational. We suffered damage from a hailstorm of about 3 mos. after operational and have been trying to get them back out to take the panels down so we can have our roof repaired but now they won’t even answer our emails or phone calls. They asked for payment up front so when our insurance company payed us for the removal we sent them a check for over $9k. Now they will not answer any communications from us. I’m not sure what to do at this point? The system has never worked as it was promised, we have been paying $300-$400-month Entergy bills on top of the payment for the system. In the meantime, our home is getting water damage because of a leaky roof.

I started working for sunpro solar in summer 2021. I joined the company because it was family owned and run by incredibly passionate and talented people. I had never worked in sales or solar and loved my time in this new position and industry. But then we all started seeing everything slip away after the sale to ADT. We were first encouraged by the ownership of ADT and rebranding to a national brand but quickly saw a change in the infrastructure that interfered with installations, permitting, system activation, etc. Many of my projects were not installed within 6 to 9 months. I finally called it quits in Fall 22 and apparently the local office I was working with in NC closed soon thereafter. Again, I truly enjoyed and respected the initial Sunpro Solar Company but the transition to ADT was the beginning of the end and should never have happened. If there were financial problems with Sunpro before the ADT acquisition, we didn’t know it because we were all killing it and everything was running smoothly in operations and installations! Truly hated to see something that was once so good and productive and trustworthy turned into something ineffective & incompetent.
Everyone seems to be asking questions about their warranties and financing and other issues that are answered in the article. Based upon my limited industry knowledge and understanding, everything presented in the article is accurate. Warranties will still be honored by ADT and or the manufacturers. Some solar companies may not be able to honor their own warranties. If you are mid installation & your company has closed, get a lawyer asap.

What will happen to people who only had solar panels installed and the system is still not operational and still being charged for monthly installments and still paying monthly power bill
Chris says
SunPro was crooks. They screwed my mom and dad from their rebates, because they are retired an have no tax liability. Matt was a crooked POS who changed their order several times, damaged their roof, their porch and took threatening a lawsuit against them to get them to show we were serious about them fixing the roof. Because of the roof damage, they wanted to put panels on roof, we said no, they can do a ground mount at their cost. 24 panel ground mount at their cost was 4800.00 with shipping. They charged my parents 10K when the agreed to their cost. Solar and a roof for a 1500 square foot roof at most should have been 9-11k. My parents got screwed paying 22K for their roof and 45 for a 24 panel system on a ground mount. When we asked for an itemized breakdown on the items charged, the refused to provide one saying we don’t do that. How is ADT going to honor warranties and installs when they have no techs?
Ray Slingerland says
Why are they still recruiting customers to sell solar too if they are going to cease the private residential customer??
R says
Sunpro was* respectable, and respectful. They cared about the quality of the process and the quality of their people. ADT taking them over was a death sentence from the start. I told my wife to quit working for them when they kept making knee jerk changes removing all of the tangible benefits for being a worthy company to work for. They let go some truly talented and passionate people- and played favoritism to the highest. Not sad to see this whole thing flop.
I hope anyone who was a customer knows the truth- ADT never cared. I hope these customers can find support and quality service going forward.
Edward E Sweat says
How do I get a list of the abandoned customers in my market? So that I can help them with their solar systems? We are a twenty four year old solar company in florida and have acquired three other abandoned businesses and keep their customers happy with service and finished their installs.

Lynn says
Sir, I am one of those customers. We need a total roof replacement and our insurance company and roofers are ready to go however there is no one on ADT’s approved contractor list in our area. We are in the panhandle. You may want to consider reaching out to ADT to find out what you can do to get your business on that list. If you become an approved contractor and would consider doing work in our area, please reach out to me. We have 21 years of warranty left on our system and are needing to use an approved contractor to not void the warranty.
Michael Markison says
This company was terrible thank God we ended our contract.
Jason Bruns says
How do you end your contract? Unsatisfied customer as well.
Douglas Harper says
Yes, I would like to know as well! ADT Still owes me $1500 for damages to my New Roof! …And I can’t get ANYONE at ADT to respond. Honestly ADT should offer FREE Security Service to all the Customers they screwed over with their Solar Program as an apology, worst 2 years of my life dealing with a major company!
Crystal Biby-Dodson says
Call the new number . Best of luck getting them to admit that you have am account with them . Even with the account number ! They’ve played us a few times , then made us call other people thru their company – bosses – techs .
Jo says
Did you have to go through court to end your contract?
James says
Sunpro was pushing hard to enter the stock market in 2020, kept talking about the IPO dates etc. Then they lost lots of talent that got them up there that year. They ended up getting bought by ADT for a reason. Sunpro was headed downhill before getting acquired so ADT was bamboozled
Mercedes Feliu says
What is going to happen for people who installed with sunpro/adt????
Crystal Biby-Dodson says
Nothing . We pay our bill until their business caves , then we’re responsible for getting the panels – batteries down and disposed of . Find a lawyer now would be my best guess .
Terrance says
How does this affect current customers who had solar panels installed by ADT, and are still paying for them. What about the warranty?
LAURIE GASSAWAY says
I would like to know the same! I don’t think my panels are working right. I have had them for nearly 5 years and my electric has gone back up to what it was before. I don’t know who to call!
Dennis says
Bill hit the nail on the head with his comment.
Also, you can’t run a solar company without design engineers. Hire all the consultants you want but eventually you need to get permits approved and the system installed.
Bill says
That’s what happens when you run out every one that made the company successful and bring in people who are extremely talented and intelligent but know nothing about solar
Jonathan says
Placing the wrong people in the wrong position, listening to people that don’t know what they are doing but holding what they say as credible.
Matt Singer says
Is this the Bill I know??
Bill says
Matt, no. I’m the Bill you know. Lol. At least the one from Little Rock.
